Explanation
This receipt was issued by the Daehan Maeil Sinbo (Korea Daily News) on April 4, 1907, to 74 residents of Janggot-dong village, Ganghwa Island, for their contribution of 64 won to the campaign for national debt redemption. Their names are listed in the campaign ad carried by the newspaper on page 4 of its April 12 issue of the same year. The signature “Yang” near the bottom of the receipt is assumed to have been written by Yang Gi-tak, general secretary of the newspaper and inspector of the General Headquarters of Fundraising for National Debt Redemption.
