Explanation
A declaration written by a local scholar surnamed Jeong, pleading passionately with the Korean public to participate in the national debt redemption movement so they could continue to live “with their heads [high] holding up Korea’s skies above, and their feet planted on Korea’s land.” This is assumed to have been the original text, based on which the Daehan Maeil Sinbo (Korea Daily News) carried an announcement of donation collection in the township of Yonggung on May 14, 1907. It is important evidence that the press played a crucial role in spreading the movement.
